Pine Rivers Special School is a state special school which delivers a progressive and inclusive education that realises the potential of every student from Prep to Year 12. Our inclusive school contributes to a diverse and vibrant community.

Special Schools provide a highly individualised curriculum for students who have a severe disability which includes an intellectual disability.

To be eligible for enrolment in a state special school Section 166 (1) of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 (Qld) (Act) requires that the child or young person is a “person with a disability", and that the state special school is able to cater for the educational needs of the child or young person.  The child or young person must meet all four of the Education Minister's criteria set out in the Provision that:

  • 1. they have a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992
  • 2. they have a severe disability which includes an intellectual disability
  • 3. they are unlikely to attain the levels of development of which they are capable unless they receive special education; and
  • 4. their educational program is best delivered in a special school taking into account the appropriateness of this placement for them.

Parents and carers of children who may be eligible to enrol at a special school and wish to seek information about enrolment should contact the Guidance Officers for details of the enrolment process. The eligibility process can be further explained by the Guidance Officers at Pine Rivers Special School.
